![]() Selling subscriptions to local numbers fits into that broader push, and it is something that should prove popular. Viber, which is particularly popular in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, has generated direct revenue for a while through various initiatives such as charging for making calls to non-Viber numbers (similar to Skype), selling stickers, and more. Facebook has struggled to monetize its $20 billion WhatsApp acquisition, and only recently has it started making headway by targeting businesses. The first 10,000 people who sign up can also lock in a discount $1.99 subscription for life.Ībove: Viber: Subscribing to a local numberĪchieving scale on messaging apps is a hard enough feat in itself, but once that scale is achieved, it’s not always easy to make money. “From expats who need a local phone number that connects them back home, to global business owners who want overseas clients to feel they are located nearby, this new feature gives them a local presence no matter where they are.” Making moneyĪt launch, Viber Local Numbers can only be purchased for the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., but it said that it expects to add more markets to the mix soon. “The new Viber Local Number enriches our users in a way that makes Viber the most powerful communication app out there,” noted Viber CEO Djamel Agaoua. In effect, this means you can take business calls through your iPad. ![]() There are clear benefits to offering local numbers through a messaging app such as this: Business people can get themselves a local telephone number to deal with clients, even if they’re traveling on the other side of the world friends or relatives can call Viber users at their local rates, without being on Viber themselves and Viber users can access their Local Number across all Android and iOS platforms. The company told VentureBeat that it plans to make the number function bidirectionally in the future. So if someone messages you on your special Viber number asking a question, you won’t be able to respond. ![]() There are caveats with the service for now, though: Viber users can’t call out using their local number, and they can’t respond to text messages using their local number. So lock those settings down as much as you can! One thing we really loved about Viber is in 2020 they joined the #StopHateForProfit campaign (Mozilla did too!) and cut all business ties with Facebook. With Viber Local Number, which has been in closed beta until now, users can pay $4.99 per month to access a local telephone number for anyone outside of Viber to call or text (SMS).įor the caller, it costs whatever their network rates are for calling a local number, while the Viber user doesn’t pay anything extra beyond their monthly subscription. Their ad partners may also combine the data collected about you when using Viber with their outside records to do even more targeting. They collect users’ IP-address location, gender, and age to target these ads, although users can opt out of gender and age targeting if they take the time to change their settings. And it's been reported about 20% of Viber’s revenue comes from ads. As always, it’s good to be careful reading or downloading things from people you don’t know. Also, Viber has had problems with bad people sending lots of spam and viruses. Some things they do we don’t love: When you join a group, your phone number will be visible to all group members, which could be a lot of people, so be careful. Some other good thing they do: Once a message is delivered, it is deleted from their servers so your messages aren’t sitting around where others could potentially access them and you can choose to hide yourself from any of the contacts in your contact list (handy when it comes to that ex of yours!). It's not perfect, but we do like they've been using end-to-end encryption by default since 2016 (except for group calls, those are only encrypted in transit). Especially when compared to other similar messaging apps like Telegram and Whatsapp. Viber seems to do a fairly good job at protecting their users' privacy and security.

They do, however, have fairly unique alternate, "powered" attacks that are temporarily activated by using an artifact. Instead, we get a fairly weak and unwieldy weapon that I would only rank above the wand (pistol) and below every other pickup weapon except maybe the gauntlets of the necromancer (chainsaw). ![]() They're nearly straight ripoffs from Doom, with the exception of the BFG which has no equivalent in Heretic. The weapons, unfortunately, are uninspired. If you get hit, that's because you didn't dodge, and not because the RNG decided that chaingunner across the map has no trouble hitting you even if you're running at 100 mph. Additionally, there is no monster with a hitscan attack. Non-boss monsters all have reasonable amounts of HP so they can be killed fairly quickly. There is no pain elemental, arch-vile or revenant. Maps are also usually generous with redundant weaponry, making them more friendly toward speed runs and pistol starts. Consequences of better mapping are less "fuck you" traps, less and better overall use of damage floors and less timed door/elevator fuckery. There's still some pretty dumb or forgettable stuff, sure, but nothing outright bad. There are no levels that will make you groan. Nevertheless, it has significant gameplay improvements over Doom: It's structured in episodes of 8 levels + 1 secret level, exactly like Doom 1 was. You look for switches and keys to ultimately reach the exit teleport/switch. It also affects some projectiles, which is funny looking if the push is particularly strong and meant to simulate water current that shouldn't affect projectiles flying in the air. ![]() It only has a few of the engine improvements that would be seen later in Hexen: an inventory system, ambient sounds and "pushing" sectors, the latter being mostly used to simulate water currents and sometimes wind. Developed by Raven Software, Heretic is the game that came after Doom and before Hexen. ![]() Each section lets you access your music and that of the Apple Music service in a different way. Spotify has been rumored to be imminently launching its Spotify HiFi lossless tier for ages, but so far nothing has materialized. They tout the sonic benefits of their lossless and hi-res FLAC files (available in their more expensive optional subscription tiers), which they claim are an improvement on any lossy formats, including AAC, regardless of how those AAC files were created. Keep in mind, however, that streaming lossless will take up significantly more data and more hard drive space when downloading, and there are some things you need to know to maximize the listening experience.Ĭompeting music services like Deezer, Tidal, and Amazon Music HD take a different approach to high-quality audio. Apple’s entire library of more than 90 million songs has been remastered for the Atmos experience and made available in the Apple lossless format, which the company says is a reproduction that preserves the quality of the original recording. To better compete with lossless music providers (outlined below), in June this year, Apple rolled out Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos and lossless audio for no additional cost to subscribers. While these AAC files are good quality for most people, they’re not considered hi-res, nor are they lossless, which means that, in theory, they won’t sound as good as CD quality. The musicĪll of the tracks in the 90 million-plus Apple Music catalog use the AAC format, a compressed, lossy file type that has significant technical advantages over the similar but older MP3. Students will pay $6 per month, while a new-ish Voice plan, designed to optimize the functions of the Siri voice assistant, was announced last year and will run you $6 per month. At the moment, Apple offers a one-month free trial (or more if you buy eligible audio devices), and after the trial period, the service will cost you $10 per month for the Individual plan or $15 per month for a Family plan that accommodates up to six members. It also blends your personal music catalog with on-demand streaming and live radio, all in one place. Like Spotify, Apple Music offers millions of streaming songs on demand. That’s what they said in the 80s, right? Bodacious? Or was it tubular? The world is pixel perfect, neon and totally bodacious. As does retro platformer Narita Boy from developer Studio Koba. Neon lights and wicked music definitely transport us there too. Those aren’t the only things that remind us of the 80s. Jump back into the 80s and what do you remember? Cassette tapes, Rubik’s cubes and, of course, the Atari. Some of its platforming mechanics feel imprecise, its puzzles are frequently repeated, and there isn't a robust system in place for tracking objectives. The Creator is a genius. That said, it does have a couple of shortcomings that hold it back from greatness. Its retro-future setting is beautifully realised through some sleek pixel art and an addictive 80s synth pop soundtrack, and its combat is fast-paced, varied, and fluid. It's narrative might have given me a headache, but I was still pretty impressed with everything that Narita Boy had to offer. The pixelated visuals aren't too shabby here either, and I like how an optional CRT filter is present to really capture the feel that you're playing hardware released during the same era the game is set in. The 80s synth pop tunes here perfectly emphasise the retro-future aesthetic, and I found many of the tracks to be stuck in my head long after putting down my Nintendo Switch. The fact I didn't get punished for this made it more tempting.Ī special shout-out needs to be given to Narita's absolutely magical soundtrack. This is something that I would have liked to have seen expanded upon, as I just found myself growing bored and guessing the combination until I got it correct. The correct symbols can usually be found scattered throughout the nearby area, so it encourages you to explore and to interact with the objects around you. These puzzles admittedly feel really repetitive, as they continually require you to enter in the correct combination of coloured symbols. You'll also encounter several puzzles along your journey that you'll need to solve to activate portals between different areas. Something that I did find, however, is that the up slash ability felt imprecise and this led to several unfair deaths when I needed to use it to propel myself over oncoming projectiles. There's a great sense of familiarity here between both gameplay styles, and as a result, they feel tightly connected. You'll need to use the same dash for avoiding attacks to scale gaps, for example, and the same downward attack used to punish enemies is required to shatter obstacles in your path. When it comes to the platforming aspects of the game, I really like how your abilities in combat translate over and are used within the same way. The encounters themselves amp up the challenge, but fortunately, Narita Boy is pretty generous with its checkpoints. Some of the most creative of these saw me fighting against fire-breathing dragons, laser-blasting parrots, and giant razor-toothed fish. The enemy variety here is really varied and often you'll have to fight against several different enemies who have their own different attack patterns and behaviours at the very same time.Īlong with these close-quarters battles against enemies, there are also many powerful bosses that offer a challenge and prove to be a visual spectacle. Using the Techno Sword, you can perform slashes in every direction, and there are charged special moves that you can use too, with one turning your blade into a shotgun and another turning it into a laser beam. Narita Boy's melee-focused combat is fluid and fast-paced and there are many different abilities that you'll unlock as you progress. Gameplay within Narita Boy is a mix between combat encounters, platforming, and puzzle solving. If you had a bit of trouble following that, then don't worry, you're not alone! The story might be a little hard to comprehend, but luckily, the gameplay more than makes up for it. Somehow the real world and that of the creator's best-selling game Narita Boy have fused together and it's up to you to come to the rescue. The story is set within the 1980s, and the aforementioned Creator is the mastermind behind a top-selling video game console known as the Narita One. The perplexing story at the centre of Narita Boy sees you explore a vast virtual world known as the Digital Kingdom to restore the memories of the all-important Creator. Studio Koba's retro-future 2D action platformer, Narita Boy is the developer's debut project that was designed with the plan to "create unique and bizarre experiences for the player with astonishing visuals, incredible stories, amazing gameplay." And, after playing through the game, I can confidently say that Narita Boy has just achieved that. ![]() When someone wants to access the contents inside, they just have to enter the password. You gather your files and folders together, select a password, encrypt them, and they’re put in a single, compressed folder. The essential technology behind zip files has been around for decades. While the technology behind them is quite old, and they don’t have the security required to protect extremely sensitive information, they’re great for compressing and sharing large amounts of data in easy-to-transport folders. The process is still a little complicated because of the “Share” business, but it’s a heck of a lot better than having no option at all.Zip files are a fast and easy option when you want to protect files from being accessed by casual users. To send this zip file to someone, long press on the file to bring up the options menu, press Share, and then select one of the many options available. For this example, I’m just going to use the ones I have in my base iCloud Drive folder. Hit Select in the upper right of the menu for the folder where you’ve put all the files you want to compress. Fortunately, once you’ve got all the files in one place, it’s really simple. This can be complicated and time-consuming, as you’ll have to choose or make a new folder and then move all the desired files into that folder with the Move option. The hardest part of making a zip file on iOS or iPadOS is getting all the files in one place. If you want to look at a specific file in the zip file without having to swipe over to it, press the Table of Contents button in the lower right. If you want to save a specific file to a different spot in this preview menu, press the Share button in the lower left and sort the file as needed. The interface is basically the same regardless of whether you use Mail or Gmail. You can then swipe through previews of all the compatible files. Press on the file to bring up the menu mentioned above, and then press Preview Content. From there, you can follow the steps in the section above.īut Mail (and Gmail) both allow you to get a peek at what’s inside a zip file without opening it. How to open a zip file through the Mail app Most image and text files should work fine, though. If there’s only one file, it’ll usually show up listed according to the date the file was created. If you sorted your downloads by date, the unpacked files should show up in a new folder right next to the zip file. If you’re having trouble finding it, sort your downloads by date by swiping down on the interface and pressing Date from the “Sorted by” menu. You should see your zip file in the Downloads folder. You’ll also have to take this route if you’re on Chrome. Alternatively, you can navigate to the Downloads folder directly by opening the Files app and pressing Downloads from the main menu. You’ll be taken to the Downloads section of the Files app. If you’re on Safari, press the Downloads button in the upper right. (It’s probably best to put it in the Downloads folder of iCloud Drive, especially for these instructions.) In the menu that pops up, press Save to Files. Note: If you’re using the Chrome app, press the link and then press “ Open in…” at the bottom of the page when the file is finished downloading.
